Sciatica

WHAT IS SCIATICA?

Sciatica refers to the underlying medical symptoms of a type of leg pain that originates in the lower back and goes through the buttocks and the large sciatic nerve at the back of the leg.

CAUSES OF SCIATICA

The most common causes of Sciatica are the following:

  • Narrowing of the spinal canal in the lower back known as Lumbar spinal stenosis
  • Breakdown of discs, which act as cushions between the vertebrae. Also known as Degenerative disc disease
  • Pregnancy
  • Spondylolisthesis –a condition where one vertebra slips forward over another one

SYMPTOMS OF SCIATICA

Sciatic pain can vary from infrequent to constant. However, it usually occurs when the large sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated in the lumbar spine.

Oftentimes, sciatica is characterized by one or a combination of these symptoms:

  • Numbness or weakness of the leg
  • Difficulty moving the leg or foot
  • Constant pain in one side of the leg or buttock
  • Leg pain that is described as burning, tingling or searing
  • A sharp pain that leads to difficulty in walking or sitting
